Casa Batlló is one of Gaudi's most celebrated expressions of creative and artistic freedom.
Gaudi's Casa Batlló is more than just a building. It has become a legendary icon of art and architecture in Barcelona. Here, light, color and shapes interact with wood, glass, ceramics and quarried stone, creating a distinctive visual experience with a breathtaking and one-of-a-kind style. Located in the heart of the city on Passeig de Gracia, this fantastical building jumps out at you with its wavy lines and playful colors. One of the seven works by the master architect that has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the property is a great example of Modernism, the distinguished form of Catalan Art Nouveau. It features “trencadís”, mosaic work with broken pieces of tiles, a technique introduced by Gaudí.
Enjoy a tour through the mezzanine, or main floor, where the Batlló family once lived, taking your time to appreciate the swirling shapes and incredible attention to detail that is characteristic of Gaudí. Peer down the internal light shaft, with its beautiful blue and white tile work. Walk up the sweeping staircase that was originally the building’s communal stairs. Visit the attic, which was formerly used as a laundry and drying area. Even that humble purpose was enriched with a magnificent hallway with the appearence of a spine bone!
Make sure you don’t miss the magnificent roof with its dancing chimneys and mesmerizing views of the city! Legend has it that the curved rooftop of Casa Batlló is meant to represent the backbone of the dragon slayed by Sant Jordi, that the cross rising majestically towards the sky represents the knight’s sword, and the balconies on the fascinating facade are the skulls of the dragon’s victims. Locals even have a nickname for the building, calling it the “Casa dels Ossos”, or House of Bones.
Immerse yourself in this creative and imaginative house, yet another masterpiece by the great architect. The audio guide is quite useful for getting a deeper understanding of this unusual and emblematic architectural feat. Maybe stop by the gift shop to find some special and unique presents for the folks back home. Treat yourself to this unforgettable experience!
